October in the Valnerina: two hours of water, and the truffle year opens

This month in the Valnerina

Facts checked: 9 October 2026. Release times from the falls’ official timetable. The operator can change the schedule at short notice – confirm yours the week you travel.

October is the month the valley trades spectacle for quiet. The falls run for two short windows a day rather than half of it; the truffle year finally opens; and the last of the harvest visits wind up. If you like this place with the volume down, this is the month.

The falls: two hours, and the morning one starts at noon

The October schedule is the shortest of the year while the water is still running properly. One detail matters more than any other:

OctoberMorningAfternoon
Weekdays12:00–13:0015:00–16:00
Weekends11:00–13:0015:00–16:00

On a weekday the water does not start until midday. That is an hour later than September, and it is the single most common way to waste a morning here in autumn: arrive at 11:00 on a Tuesday, having driven up from Rome, and spend an hour looking at a wet grey cliff. The falls are not broken. The water simply is not on yet.

The flip side is that a weekday visit is now a tight, well-defined thing: be in position by about 11:45, watch the gorge fill, and you have seen it. Our water release times page explains how the schedule works and how to check the official calendar for your own dates, and the parking and entrances page matters more than usual in a one-hour window – picking the wrong gate can cost you a third of the release.

The truffle year has reopened

September was the one genuine gap in the Umbrian truffle year. That is over: the uncinato came in on 1 October and the white truffle at the end of September, so for the first time since August something native is legally coming out of the ground here.

The one to keep in perspective is the tartufo nero pregiato, the prized black truffle the Valnerina is actually known for – that does not open until 1 December. We wrote the whole calendar up separately: the truffle year reopens, and the famous one is still two months away. Our truffle guide has the detail.

Worth the drive: saffron at Cascia, 30 October to 1 November

The Mostra Mercato dello Zafferano Purissimo takes over Cascia at the end of the month – the town’s saffron, which is a genuinely serious product rather than a souvenir, sold by the people who grew it, alongside the rest of the high-valley harvest.

It is a drive up the valley rather than a hop, and it lands on a long weekend, so treat it as a day out rather than an afternoon. If you are here at the end of October it is the one thing on the calendar worth building a day around.

Last chance: the harvest visits

Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia finishes on 25 October. Twelve Umbrian estates have been running picking, tastings and walks through the rows since late August; after the 25th the doors close for the year. Booking is compulsory and each estate sets its own hours and prices, so if this appeals, it is a phone call this week rather than a plan for later. Our Umbrian wine page covers what the region grows and which reds are worth ordering.

The honest crowd read

October is the quietest the valley gets while the falls are still worth seeing. Weekday releases are short and lightly attended; weekends still draw a crowd for the 11:00 window but nothing like August. Restaurants will seat you without booking, though some village kitchens start closing days as the season winds down – ring ahead rather than driving to a shut door.

The weather is the trade. Bright October days here are among the best of the year; wet ones are properly wet, and the lower paths at the falls get slippery. Bring grip and a layer, and treat a forecast as a suggestion.

Looking ahead to November

  • From 1 November there is no weekday release at all: the water runs only at weekends, 12:00–13:00 and 15:00–16:00 – check the published calendar before booking anything around it.
  • The uncinato and white truffle seasons both run on.
  • 1 December – the nero pregiato opens, and the valley’s best eating season starts properly.
