Here is a fact the world’s most romantic marketing machine somehow missed: St Valentine was a real bishop, and his city is fifteen minutes from our village. His relics lie in Terni’s basilica, his feast turns the city into a month-long festival of chocolate and betrothals – and in the hills above, there’s a waterfall with a viewpoint literally called the Lovers’ Balcony. Nobody packages this internationally. Consider it packaged.
February — the season that shouldn’t be a secret
While the rest of rural Italy hibernates, Terni runs its San Valentino season: over a month of events around the 14th, anchored by Cioccolentino – four days of chocolate in the saint’s own city – plus concerts, the couples’ traditions at the basilica (including the blessing for engaged couples), and winter-priced beds everywhere. It’s the only counter-seasonal romance play in Italy with an actual saint attached – and the falls run their winter timetable, so you check the release windows and build the days around a hot tub. The 48-hour romance itinerary (any season)
- Day 1, afternoon: the falls at the release – and the Lovers’ Balcony, booked ahead (€3.50 guided slot): a tunnel to a railed ledge inside the spray, named for a legend involving a nymph, a shepherd and a disapproving god. Getting soaked together is, empirically, a bonding exercise.
- Day 1, evening: dinner for two at Piermarini (the truffle table – book) or, in summer, the illuminated evening release with the day crowds gone, then a late plate at Osteria La Cascata.
- Day 2, morning: Lake Piediluco slowly – the €8 boat circuit or a rowing boat for two, then a lakefront lunch (the rankings).
- Day 2, golden hour: Labro – the car-free stone village above the lake, the area’s best sunset, and Boccondivino’s handful of candlelit tables (book, seriously – there are about six).
The set pieces, ranked by swoon
- The illuminated evening release (in 2026: summer weekend evenings, nightly in August, per the official timetable) – a floodlit 165-metre waterfall after the day-trip crowds have gone home.
- Labro at sunset – the lake goes copper, the village goes silent.
- The Lovers’ Balcony – the name writes the Instagram caption itself.
