Once a year, Piediluco turns its lake into the stage: illuminated allegorical boats parade across the dark water and a fireworks display closes the festival from the lake itself. The Festa delle Acque is the Terni area’s most atmospheric summer event, and because it’s genuinely local – built by the village districts, run by the Pro Loco – most foreign visitors have never heard of it. Their loss; possibly your gain.

2026 dates

This year’s edition – in the Pro Loco’s 60th anniversary year – runs across two long weekends: 25–26 July and 31 July–2 August 2026, with a preview evening on Saturday 27 June (a summer-solstice ritual with jazz – the festival’s roots are solstice rites honouring the sun). The two headline nights: the illuminated boat parade on Saturday 1 August and the closing piro-musical fireworks over the lake on Sunday 2 August. Entry is free. (If you’ve read older guides saying “late June–early July”: that was the traditional slot, and the solstice preview nods to it – but trust the current year’s official dates, not the folklore.)

What actually happens

• The boat parade: the village districts spend months building allegorical floats – on boats. After dark they process across the water, lit up, to music. It’s Sanremo-meets-Venice at village scale and it’s wonderful.
• The fireworks: fired over the lake, doubled by the reflection – the best fireworks setting in Umbria.
• Around them: “Vicoli e Balconi Fioriti” (the flowered-lanes competition dresses the whole village), food stands, music, and the lakefront restaurants at full throttle – book weeks ahead.

Where to watch from

• The village lakefront: front-row and busiest – claim a spot before dusk.
• From the water: ask at Spiaggia Miralago whether the tour boat is running on festival night.
• Above it all: the roadside viewpoints towards Labro give you parade, fireworks and the whole illuminated village in one frame – the photographer’s choice.

The practical warnings

Festival nights are the village’s busiest of the year: parking is genuinely hard (there’s a ZTL in the centre and enforcement is real), so arrive well before evening or park out and walk the lakefront in. Book dinner or eat early from the stands. And book your bed months out – which is where we mention, once, that our villa is 15 minutes away and sleeps six.
