Here’s the area’s best-kept secret for adrenaline: because Marmore Falls is dam-controlled, the River Nera below it has guaranteed white water all season – no spring-only lottery like most European rafting. Grade IV rapids under a Roman waterfall, gentle family floats, and canyoning in a gorge the guides call “tropical”. Within six minutes of the falls.

The operators

Two established outfits: Rafting Marmore (based at Papigno, six minutes from the falls – the big centre, full menu including the Grade IV run and canyoning; +39 330 753420) and Rafting Nera River (Ferentillo, fifteen minutes up-valley – cheaper river descents, canoes and SUP, the natural family pick). Both have English pages. Book ahead in July–August and on bridge weekends; midweek shoulder season you can often book a day out.

Practicalities

  • What’s provided: wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid, guide. Bring swimwear, a towel, and shoes that can get wet.
  • Swimming: you must be able to swim for white water; the family float is more forgiving – check the operator’s policy when you book.
  • Timing: descents are scheduled around the release windows – book the activity first, then plan the falls visit around it.
  • Combining: the classic local double: morning rafting, lunch in Arrone, afternoon at the falls at full release. Recovery: a hot tub helps; we would know.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners do the rafting at Marmore?

Yes – the Grade III–IV classic run is guided and briefed for first-timers who can swim; genuine beginners with nerves should start on the family float.

What age can children raft?

From age 4 on the gentle soft-rafting float, and children up to 16 get reduced rates on the Ferentillo river descent. The Grade IV run under the falls is adults only – 18 to 55, strictly, per the operator’s rules. It’s still the rare adventure sport the whole family genuinely can do – just not all in the same boat.

When is the rafting season?

Long – the dam guarantees water when natural-flow rivers elsewhere have died. Peak bookings run April–October; confirm winter availability directly.

Rafting or canyoning?

Rafting for the shared-boat spectacle under the falls; canyoning for full-body immersion and jumps. The genuinely committed do both in a weekend.
