Facts checked: October 2026, against the Comune di Terni and Umbria Tourism listings. We haven’t stayed in the places listed and take no commission from them. Declared interest: we own a house in Collestatte, 15 minutes away.

Lake Piediluco is the quiet one: a small, deep, green lake on the Umbria–Lazio border, twelve minutes from the Marmore Falls, with a medieval village strung along its north shore and Italy’s rowers training on the water. Sleeping here means early mornings on the lakefront and fish for dinner. It also means a handful of places to choose from, not hundreds, so here’s the whole picture.

Is Piediluco a good base?

For a lake-centred summer, yes. You can swim, row and eat by the water without getting in the car, the falls are a short drive away, and in the evening the village empties of day-trippers and goes back to being a fishing village. The honest downsides are the ones we gave in our where to stay guide: on summer weekends parking in the village is genuinely hard, and out of season it can be so quiet that the shutters are down. If you want shops, restaurants open every night and a choice of everything, Terni or a bigger town suits better; if you want the falls on foot, Collestatte or Marmore village does.

Where you can stay

The Comune di Terni’s tourism office, which covers Piediluco, lists these places on the lake (Comune di Terni tourism). We haven’t stayed in them, so treat this as a map, not a ranking, and check recent reviews and the CIN code on any listing before you book.

There are also holiday homes and apartments around the lake. They’re the better option for families and longer stays, and our checklist for choosing a holiday rental in Umbria applies just as well to a flat in Piediluco as to a villa in the hills.

Lakefront, village or hills?

  • On the lakefront: the view and the swimming are the point. Ask for a lake-view room specifically, and ask about parking before you arrive on a summer Saturday.
  • In the village: you can walk to the restaurants and the boat jetties, but rooms on the main street can hear the evening passeggiata.
  • Above the lake: quieter and often with more space, but you’ll drive to everything, including dinner.

When to book ahead

July and August weekends fill first, along with the Festa delle Acque, when boats are lit up on the lake and the village is packed, and the big rowing regattas, which bring teams and their families. Outside those dates, and especially on weekdays in spring and early autumn, you’ll often find a room at short notice, but restaurants can be closed midweek in winter.
