Piediluco is a lake you can actually get out on – a tour boat, pedalos and canoes from the beach, sport fishing with a licence, and the spectacle of Italy’s national rowing squad training past your breakfast. Here’s the current, verified picture.
The lake tour boat
The tour boat runs from Spiaggia Miralago (Via Noceta 4, between Hotel Miralago and the Baraonda Caffè): a lake circuit of around 40–45 minutes, adults €8, children 3–10 €4, maximum 45 passengers – booking by phone/WhatsApp (+39 348 775 66 00, ask for Silvana). If you’d rather book online in English, the Terni operator Dreavel sells the same-format cruise (€8/€4): daily June–August on reservation, weekends in April–May and September. For families there’s an occasional themed children’s cruise – the “Fantabattello”, sailing with Gnefro, the elf of the Valnerina (Vivi Terni).
What you get from the water: the village and Rocca from their best angle, the echo point under Monte Caperno (crews test it), Labro stacked above the far shore, and in April the international rowing course from lane level.
Hire: pedalos, canoes and rowing boats
Spiaggia Miralago is the equipped beach and hire point: pedalos, step water-bikes, canoes/kayaks and rowing boats, plus loungers and a bar for the non-paddling contingent; hire rates aren’t published online, so ask at the beach. Stay out of the marked rowing lanes; this is the national training water and the crews move faster than you’d believe.
Rowing — the lake’s real identity
The Italian Rowing Federation trains here year-round – the lake was chosen for its stillness: no wind, no current, and a 2,200 m course. Each April the Memorial Paolo d’Aloja international regatta brings international crews (the 40th edition, 24–26 April 2026, drew around 20 nations) – watched from the public lakefront, and one of the best off-peak reasons to be here. Any morning, dawn crews in the mist are the lake’s signature photograph.
Fishing
Sport fishing is allowed – Piediluco is a regulated fishing zone under Regione Umbria rules. You’ll need the regional sport-fishing licence, obtainable online (how to get it). Note the special pike-protection rules on this lake: closed season for pike 1 January–31 March, specific leader/hook requirements for lure fishing. The lake holds pike, perch, coregone (whitefish) and eel – which is also a preview of the restaurant menus (where to eat).
