Where you can actually swim

Straight answer first: you cannot swim at Marmore Falls. It’s a controlled hydroelectric watercourse whose flow is turned on in scheduled releases, so the river below the falls can go from a trickle to a powerful surge on a timetable – which is exactly why bathing in the basins is forbidden and dangerous. Treat the falls as a place to watch, not to enter, and keep to the marked trails and viewing points.

Where you can — Lake Piediluco

The proper local answer is the lake. Five to ten minutes’ drive from the falls’ upper entrance, Lake Piediluco has authorised bathing points open across the summer season – calm, clean water with the village and mountains around it. How you “swim” the river — legally

If it’s the river you want – the cold, clear Nera in its gorge – the way to be in it safely and legally is with the licensed operators: rafting and river-tubing/hydrospeed run guided descents of the Nera, wetsuits and helmets included, precisely because the water is dam-controlled. Water temperature — the honest bit

This is mountain-fed and hydro-fed water: the Nera runs genuinely cold even in high summer, which is bracing on a 35°C day but not a warm-bath experience – one reason the guided river trips put you in a wetsuit. The lake is warmer and gentler, and the better bet for children and for actually lingering.

Leave it as you found it

Wherever you go in: pack out everything, don’t build dams or move rocks in the riverbed, and check drone rules before flying near the falls or the lake (Italian ENAC rules apply, and protected areas add restrictions).
