Facts checked: July 2026. The timetable specifics below are this year’s – the pattern repeats annually, the exact hours don’t: always cross-check the live timetable.

Summer is when this area shows its full hand: evening water releases with the falls floodlit, a festival on the lake, one of Europe’s great arts festivals up the valley, and swimming season in full authorisation. It’s also when the crowds come – predictably, and therefore manageably. Here’s the season, honestly.

The evening release — summer’s signature

Through summer the falls run evening releases: in July 2026 that means Saturdays and Sundays 21:00–22:00 with the park open to 22:30, and in August, every single night – 10:00–19:00 plus 21:00–22:00, Ferragosto included (verified against the official schedule). The day-trip coaches are long gone by nine; the floodlit falls are the area’s defining summer evening. Plan at least one.

The summer calendar (2026 dates – refreshed annually)

  • Late June–mid July: the Festival dei Due Mondi at Spoleto (2026: 26 June–12 July) – world-class programme, town beds gone months ahead; the valley is the overspill.
  • Early July: Ferentillo’s Sagra del Cinghiale.
  • Late July–early August: the Festa delle Acque (2026: 25–26 July + 31 July–2 August; illuminated boat parade 1 August, fireworks over the lake 2 August).
  • 15 August – Ferragosto: the falls’ biggest day of the year – past editions have recorded 10,000+ entries in a day, with ticket sales suspended at capacity. Treat it as spectacle or avoid it entirely; there’s no middle setting.

Beating August (the local playbook)

  • Go early or go late: the release windows run all day – the 10:00 opening hour and the post-19:00 lull bracket the coach traffic.
  • Buy falls tickets online – the queue-skip earns its keep in July–August, and peak days can hit capacity.
  • Give afternoons to the lake: the authorised bathing points run all season, and the boat and pedalo hour is a better 35°C plan than a trail climb.
  • Book the tables: summer weekends fill the good kitchens – the list, phone numbers included.
  • Heat honesty: valley-floor afternoons in high summer are genuinely hot; trails are for mornings (the villa runs air conditioning via its heat pumps, for the record – declared bias).

Frequently asked questions

Are the falls illuminated in summer?

Yes – the evening releases run floodlit: weekend evenings in July 2026 and nightly through August (21:00–22:00), per the official schedule. Check the current timetable for your dates.

How crowded is Marmore Falls in August?

Peak days exceed 10,000 visitors and capacity limits exist – but the pattern is midday-heavy and coach-driven. Mornings, evenings and any weekday beat any weekend; Ferragosto is its own weather system.

Can you swim anywhere in summer?

Yes – Lake Piediluco’s four authorised bathing points, in season 1 May–30 September (2026), with the water rated excellent this year. The swimming guide.
