When is the water on at Marmore Falls?
It changes monthly. July 2026: weekdays 11:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00; weekends longer, plus illuminated 21:00–22:00 evening releases; August, 10:00–19:00 + 21:00–22:00 daily. Always check the current timetable – it’s the single most important fact for your visit.
How much are Marmore Falls tickets?
€12 adults, €10 for children 5–9 and over-70s, under-5s free (2026). Buying online skips the queue; family rates are ticket-office only; on winter no-release days entry drops to €6. Full price table.
Is Marmore Falls man-made?
Yes – Roman engineers cut the channel in 271 BC to drain the Rieti marshes, and it has been re-engineered several times since. At 165 metres it’s the tallest man-made waterfall in Europe. The full story.
Will I get wet at Marmore Falls?
At the Lovers’ Balcony – thoroughly, and that’s the point (it’s now a booked guided visit, €3.50). Elsewhere, only light spray near the lower pools at full release. Ponchos are sold at the gate. Trails guide.
Can you swim at Marmore Falls?
No – forbidden and dangerous. The swimming is at Lake Piediluco, ten minutes away, at four authorised bathing points (season 1 May–30 September). Where you can actually swim.
Which entrance should I use?
The Lower (Belvedere Inferiore) for the classic full-height view and the main trail; the Upper for the top-of-the-falls sensation. They’re a 10-minute drive apart and satnavs regularly deliver people to the wrong one. Don’t be them.

How far is Marmore Falls from Rome?
About 105 km: 75–90 minutes by car, or 2–2.5 hours by train to Terni plus the Marmore Link connecting bus on one integrated ticket. The honest Rome guide.
Do you need a car in southern Umbria?

What’s the nearest airport?
Perugia (~65 min, limited routes); realistically Rome Ciampino (~1h30) or Fiumicino (~1h45) for most visitors. All routes compared.
The lake and the valley
Can you swim in Lake Piediluco?
Yes – at four authorised points in 2026 (Centro Urbano, Sirenetta, Eco, Comunanza), 1 May–30 September, with water officially rated excellent this season. The Ara Marina stretch is excluded this year. The swimming guide.
Are the Ferentillo mummies real?
Yes – naturally mummified human remains, preserved by the crypt’s soil and ventilation, studied since 1871. Around two dozen bodies are displayed; recent visitors report €6 entry. Call ahead: hours are informal. The full story.
Can you do a truffle hunt near the falls?
Yes – the Piermarini family runs hunts with their dogs at Ferentillo, 15 minutes away, usually paired with lunch at their restaurant. Black winter truffle season peaks November–March; summer scorzone runs June–August. How it works.
Is Narnia a real place?
Narni, 30 minutes away, was Roman Narnia (299 BC) – and C.S. Lewis genuinely took the name from it, underlining it in an atlas as a boy. The new Netflix film arrives in cinemas 12 February 2027. The real Narnia.
Planning
Is Terni a good base for the area?
It’s practical (station, supermarkets) but urban – you’d be commuting to the scenery. The falls-side villages, the lake, or Arrone put you inside it instead. The fair comparison, our bias declared: where to stay.
How many days does the area deserve?
Two days covers falls + lake; three adds the Valnerina properly; a week fills without padding – itineraries for each: start here.
When is the best time to visit?
June for evening illuminations and the lentil bloom; September for peak weather without August’s crowds; February for the San Valentino season in the saint’s own city; December for the illuminated Christmas falls. The 12-month calendar.
When do things book out?
The Italian bridge weekends (25 April, 1 May, 2 June), Ferragosto week, the Spoleto Festival fortnight (late June–mid July) and festival weekends. Easter weekend 2026 put 13,000 people through the falls – book those dates months ahead.
