Food & Drink
Calendar checked: July 2026. Sagra dates are village decisions made village-late – dated entries below are verified for the year shown; the rest carry their usual windows until posters go up. We refresh this page each season.

The area’s eating calendar runs all year, and the best entries aren’t festivals staged for visitors – they’re the village originals, where the queue is local, the plastic cups are non-negotiable and the wild boar is better than several restaurants’. Month by month:
The eating year
| When | What | The eating |
|---|---|---|
| Early February | Cioccolentino, Terni (2026: four days around St Valentine’s run-up) | Chocolate takes over the saint’s own city – tastings, showpieces, the pampepato revival. The counter-seasonal weekend nobody abroad knows about: romantic playbook. |
| Early June | Wine Lover Weekend, Terni | The city’s food-and-wine weekend – enoteca crawl territory. |
| Early July | Sagra del Cinghiale, Ferentillo | The wild-boar original: long tables under the fortresses, ragù by the ladle. The genuine article – arrive hungry, expect nothing fancy, leave converted. |
| Summer | Village sagre across the valley – Arrone’s Assunta festivities in mid-August, and the food stands at the lake’s Festa delle Acque | Sagra rule: if the car park is a field and the menu is photocopied, you’re in the right place. |
| Mid Oct–mid Nov | Frantoi Aperti, region-wide | The open-mill weekends: watch the new oil run, then bruschetta at the source. Our local stop is Frantoio Bartolini at Arrone – pressing since 1850, free guided visits bookable online. |
| Nov–Mar | Black truffle season (the pregiato) | Not a festival – a season: hunts running, menus upgrading, prices honest at source. Truffle country. |
| December | Pampepato season, Terni | The PGI spiced chocolate-nut cake that owns the city’s Christmas – every pasticceria’s window, one per suitcase minimum. |
Sagra etiquette (for the uninitiated)
Cash. Queue at the cassa first, order by ticket, collect at the hatch. Sit where there’s space – sharing tables is the format, and the format is the point. Wine arrives in unlabelled bottles and is better than it has any right to be. Nobody minds children, dogs or your terrible Italian; everybody minds queue-jumping. Portions assume you’ve been haymaking.
Frequently asked questions
What food festivals happen near Marmore Falls?
Cioccolentino (Terni, early February), the Ferentillo wild-boar sagra (early July), the region’s Frantoi Aperti open-mill weekends (mid-October to mid-November) and the village sagre of summer – plus the truffle season itself, November to March.
Are the sagre worth planning around?
Frantoi Aperti and Cioccolentino, yes – both are date-worthy anchors. The summer sagre are better treated as luck: if your dates hit one, cancel the restaurant.
