The Valnerina

Facts checked: July 2026. We’re mid-arrangement on partner terms with local operators – any commission relationship will be declared here per our disclosure policy.
The Valnerina is black-truffle country the way Burgundy is wine country: not a marketing line but an economy. The world’s largest truffle house – Urbani, founded 1852 – grew from Scheggino, right here in the valley, and the woods above the Nera still produce the black gold that ends up shaved over pasta from Tokyo to New York. The difference with eating them here: the dog that found yours may be asleep under the next table.
Join a hunt — the real thing
The established experience is with the Piermarini family at Ferentillo – restaurant, farm, and truffle ground (“la cava del tartufo”) in one: you walk the woods with the hunter and his dogs, watch the find (the dogs’ paycheck is immediate and edible), then sit down to a lunch built around what came out of the ground – with cooking classes and even a children’s programme on the menu of experiences (saporipiermarini.it; +39 0744 780714). Prices aren’t published – enquire when booking.
The seasons (what’s actually in the ground when)
| Truffle | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Black winter truffle (pregiato) | ~Nov–Mar | The valley’s flagship – peak flavour, peak prices |
| Black summer truffle (scorzone) | ~Jun–Aug | Milder, cheaper, everywhere on summer menus |
| Autumn/burgundy truffle (uncinato) | ~Oct–Dec | The shoulder-season workhorse |
Harvest seasons are set by regional decree and shift slightly from year to year – check the current Umbrian calendar before planning a trip around one particular truffle.
The free bit — the Urbani museum
On Scheggino’s square, the Museo del Tartufo Urbani covers six generations of the family and the whole strange biology and business of the tuber – free entry, currently Fri–Sun plus holidays, boutique attached (dangerous). Full village context: Scheggino guide.
Eating them without the walk
Piermarini is the destination plate; the Grottino del Nera at Arrone does truffle over homemade pasta at valley prices; and in season the scorzone turns up on menus from the lake to every table near the falls. Buying to take home: the Urbani boutique at Scheggino, or preserved products from the mill shops – fresh truffles travel badly unless you’re flying straight back.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do a truffle hunt near Marmore Falls?
Yes – the Piermarini family runs hunts with their dogs at Ferentillo, 15 minutes from the falls, usually paired with lunch at their restaurant. Book ahead by phone.
When is truffle season in Umbria?
Effectively year-round in rotation: black winter truffles roughly November–March, summer scorzone June–August, autumn uncinato October–December. The winter pregiato is the one worth planning a trip around.
Is it suitable for children?
The hunt is a walk in the woods with enthusiastic dogs – most children love it, and Piermarini runs dedicated kids’ cooking sessions. Ask when booking.
