Two days, one waterfall, one lake, one perfect sunset – the classic shape of a southern Umbria weekend, and the one our guests settle into without being told. Hour-by-hour, with the water windows doing the scheduling.
This itinerary at a glance
Falls tickets + the Lovers’ Balcony slot (one transaction), Saturday dinner, the lake boat (WhatsApp), and Boccondivino if you’re doing the Labro sunset. That’s the whole admin — four messages.
Day 1 — the falls day
- By 15:00 — arrive and drop bags. If you’re coming from Rome it’s 90 minutes; from the airports, see getting here. Terrace drink, breathe.
- ~16:15 — down to the falls’ Lower entrance (Belvedere Inferiore – don’t drive to the wrong one), 45 minutes before the afternoon release window. Watch the switch-on from the lower belvedere: the siren, then the wall of water. This is the moment the whole weekend is aimed at.
- Then Trail 1 upward if your legs agree, with the Lovers’ Balcony guided slot pre-booked (€3.50, numbered places – book when you buy tickets; ponchos essential). Easier company stays on the belvedere and Trail 5: trails guide.
- ~20:00 — dinner at Osteria La Cascata at the foot of the village (book on summer weekends), or the fully gluten-free Favorito dal 1945 if that’s your table.
- Summer Saturdays: the encore. The evening release runs 21:00–22:00 with the falls illuminated – ten minutes’ walk back down, and the crowds have gone home. The single best free show in Umbria.
Day 2 — the lake day
- ~10:00 — Lake Piediluco, 15 minutes up the road. Take the €8 lake tour boat from Spiaggia Miralago (book ahead by WhatsApp – details), or hire a pedalo and do your own circuit. In season, swim at one of the authorised bathing points.
- ~13:00 — long fish lunch on the lakefront: Le Terrazze for the best current cooking, Ara Marina for the terrace-over-the-water setting – order the roast coregone either way (the honest rankings).
- Afternoon — slow. Lakefront stroll, gelato at Caffè del Colle, or the 20-minute drive round to the echo point to shout at a mountain and be answered.
- Golden hour — Labro. Ten minutes up from the lake: the car-free stone village stacked above the water, and the best sunset view in the area. If you can stretch to dinner, Boccondivino’s six tables want booking (Labro guide). Then home in the dark, smug.
Rain or winter swap-ins
Falls still work in rain (you’re getting wet at the balcony anyway); swap the lake morning for the Ferentillo mummies + a long Piermarini truffle lunch, or Terni’s museums on a washout. In winter, check the timetable twice – some weekdays have no release – and aim the trip at a weekend; December adds the illuminated Christmas programme.
