Car-free from Rome – the honest version

The car-free truth about this area, stated plainly: three trips work well by train, and the rest of the valley doesn’t. This page is the honest version of both halves – what to book, step by step, and what not to attempt without wheels.

The three trips that genuinely work

1. Marmore Falls — via the Marmore Link

1. Roma Termini/Tiburtina → Terni: regional trains roughly hourly, 60–80 minutes, from about €9 (Trenitalia).
2. Terni → the falls: the Marmore Link – one integrated ticket covering train plus the connecting bus (line 7/E621, roughly every 30 minutes, ~20 minutes’ ride). Buy it like any Trenitalia ticket.
3. The non-negotiable: time the day to the water release windows, and confirm your return bus on arrival rather than from memory. Backup: Radio Taxi Terni, +39 0744 300170.

2. Narni — pure rail + a hill

Regional train to Narni-Amelia (the station is down in Narni Scalo); bus or taxi up to the old town; the town also runs an on-call “Narni Chiama Bus” service, listed on the official tourism site. Remember the underground tour runs weekends and holidays, booked by phone only – which conveniently makes this the natural car-free Saturday: the Narni guide.

3. Spoleto — the easiest of the three

Direct regional train from Terni (or from Rome, same line), and Spoleto’s escalator system carries you from town-bottom to town-top without an engine of your own. The bridge, the Duomo circuit and lunch need no car at all: the Spoleto guide.

What NOT to attempt car-free (the kindness section)

• The Valnerina villages – the E624 bus exists (timetables) but it’s a commuter service: workable for a one-way plan with a taxi home, wrong as a sightseeing tool.
• Lake Piediluco as a day trip from Rome – reachable (the E624 continues past Marmore) but the connections eat the day; do it as part of an overnight instead.
• Labro, the abbey, Castelluccio, the truffle lunches – no, no, emphatically no, and only with a designated driver respectively.

The car-free overnight (the shape that works)

Rome → Terni → falls by Marmore Link → taxi to a falls-village bed → next morning taxi + bus back, or a second falls day. Carless guests can stay with us – Terni station is a 15–20 minute taxi – and we say plainly what the trade is: you’ll see the falls, the village and the walks superbly, and you’ll hire a driver or skip the wider valley.
