Fourteen tables worth knowing within thirty minutes of Marmore Falls – from a truffle farmer’s restaurant that people cross Italy for, to the osteria at the bottom of our own hill. Graded by occasion, because “best” depends on whether it’s Tuesday lunch in walking boots or the anniversary dinner.
The destination meals
- Piermarini – Ferentillo, 15 min. The truffle family’s own table: the owner hunts with his own dogs, and the coccorè (egg and truffle) is the valley on a plate. Book: +39 0744 780714. The meal every guest remembers.
- Boccondivino – Labro, 20 min. Six-ish tables, wine-led, in the car-free stone village above the lake – currently 4.8/5 from ~400 reviews (TripAdvisor). Book, then time it to the sunset.
The falls-side everyday (0–10 minutes)
- Osteria La Cascata – Collestatte Piano. The closest quality table to the falls: proper Umbrian osteria cooking, ciriole and grills. Our default “shall we just walk down?” answer.
- Trattoria Foco – Marmore. Small, grill-led, exceptional scores on a small base – and it books out fast, so reserve.
- Favorito dal 1945 Bistrò – Collestatte Piano. The interesting one: a fully gluten-free and lactose-free kitchen 800m from the falls – for coeliac travellers, a destination in itself.
- Il Pavone d’Oro – Collestatte Piano. Traditional and panoramic; reviews run mixed on service – the nearest option, not the best (judge yourself).
The valley (10–15 minutes)
- Grottino del Nera – Arrone. An inn since 1850: game, river fish, truffle over homemade pasta. The valley’s reliable all-rounder.
- Osteria dello Sportello – Casteldilago. Tiny, borgo-bound, Accademia della Cucina-listed – Valnerina food memory in one small room (listing). Book, and check opening days by phone.
- Rossi – Arrone. The family classic on the valley road: trout and truffle, no surprises, which is the point.
- Mulino Nera – the converted river mill agriturismo near Ferentillo.
The lakefront (12–15 minutes)
- Le Terrazze di Piediluco – the strongest current cooking on the water (TheFork 8.8/644, ~€38): grilled coregone, trout Wellington, lake-scented ciriole.
- Ara Marina – the terrace-over-the-lawn-over-the-water setting; go for a long lunch where the view does the heavy lifting (TripAdvisor 3.9). Full lake rankings: here.
The city value run (18 minutes)
- Oste della Mal’ora – Terni. Ciriole every way and a serious wine list at city prices.
- Trattoria La Mora – Terni, trading since 1904: cheap, gruff, authentic – the anti-tourist meal. More in the Terni guide.
By occasion — the cheat sheet
Closest good table: Osteria La Cascata · The blowout: Piermarini · Lake terrace: Le Terrazze (cooking) or Ara Marina (setting) · Cheap and honest: La Mora · Coeliac-safe: Favorito · Most atmospheric room: Sportello · Sunset + dinner: Boccondivino.
