Prati di Stroncone

When you want mountain air without a mountain effort, this is the answer: the Prati di Stroncone, a plateau of open meadows high above the village of Stroncone, on the ridge between the Terni basin and the Rieti valley. It’s gentle, green, cool in summer, and laced with the old paths Saint Francis walked between Terni and Greccio.

The plateau

These are broad upland meadows at roughly 1,000 metres – the sort of place Umbrians drive up to on a hot Sunday to picnic and walk off lunch. Waymarked routes cross the area (the regional walking federation lists a “Prati di Stroncone e Greccio” itinerary), and it links into the wider network toward Greccio and the Monti Reatini. It’s ideal for families, gentle loops and anyone who wants scenery without ascent.

The walks — honestly

There are easy loops of an hour or two across and around the meadows. The Prati are easy, mostly gentle walking on open ground and forest edge – well suited to children and to a lazy picnic loop.

Picnic culture — and what to bring

Half the point is the picnic. Stock up in Stroncone on the way up – bread, cheese, salumi, olive oil, something from the bakery – because there’s little to buy on the meadows. Bring water, sun cover (the meadows are open), and a layer: it’s noticeably cooler up here than in the valley, which is exactly why locals come in July and August. Stroncone village →

Summer and winter

Prime time is late spring through early autumn. In high summer it’s a genuine heat-escape from the valley floor. In winter the plateau can hold snow – lovely on a clear day, but check conditions and access before driving up.
