Just over the regional line from Lake Piediluco – the same short hop that takes you to Labro – sits a lake almost no falls-visitor finds: the Lago di Ventina. It’s small, still and spring-fed, and it makes a genuinely quiet half-day away from the crowds.

What it is

Lago di Ventina is a small natural lake in the comune of Colli sul Velino, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), close to Labro and the northern end of Lake Piediluco (it.wikipedia; Comune di Colli sul Velino). It covers about 0.12 km² with a perimeter of roughly 1.5 km and a maximum depth of about 3.5 metres. It’s fed by several springs, which keep its level steady and its water clear even through the summer – and it’s a well-known fishing lake (pike, perch, carp, tench and trout).

The walk

The lake sits in gentle, open country, and its shoreline of roughly 1.5 km makes for an easy, level stroll – the sort of quiet, uncommercial spot you can have largely to yourself. There’s also a marked “Lago di Ventina via Marmore” route on AllTrails for anyone who wants to link it toward the falls side. Come for the stillness and the clear, spring-fed water; bring what you need, as there’s little on site.
