This month in the Valnerina
Facts checked: 7 September 2026. Release times from the falls’ official timetable; harvest dates from the regional truffle calendar. The operator can change the schedule at short notice – confirm yours the week you travel.
September is the month the valley changes gear. The falls are still running generously for another few days, then the timetable shortens; the truffle year is between seasons; and the grapes are coming in early. Here is what that actually means if you are here in the next few weeks.
The falls: the schedule shortens on 14 September
Two things are worth knowing this month, and both have dates attached.
Saturday 12 September is the last evening release on the published schedule. Through the first half of the month, Saturdays carry an extra window from 20:00 to 21:00 on top of the daytime water. After 13 September that evening slot disappears from the timetable and does not return this year. If an after-dark visit is on your list, that Saturday is the last one on the books.
One honest caveat: the official page lists the evening release, but it does not say whether the floodlights run with it. In past summers the evening releases have been the lit ones, and the hour has been walked back from 21:00 to 20:00 as the light goes. If the illumination is the whole reason you are coming, ring the park before you commit to the drive.
From 14 September the daytime windows get shorter. The change is small on paper and large in practice, because it removes the long continuous weekend flow that August visitors take for granted.

Read the October row carefully if you are planning a half-day. The weekday morning window opens at 12:00, an hour later than in September, and the afternoon window is a single hour. Turn up at 11:00 on a Tuesday in October and you will be looking at a dry cliff for sixty minutes. The truffle gap nobody mentions
This is the month to be sceptical of a truffle hunt sold on a website photograph.
Umbria’s harvest is governed by species and by date. The scorzone, the summer black truffle that carries the valley through the warm months, closes on 31 August. The prized tartufo nero pregiato – the one the Valnerina is famous for – does not open until 1 December and runs to 15 March. The white truffle opens at the end of September, and the uncinato, the winter scorzone, from 1 October.
Which leaves the first three weeks of September as the one genuine gap in the truffle year. Nothing native is legally coming out of the ground here right now.
That does not mean no truffle on the menu – preserved product, and truffle from elsewhere, are both entirely normal and often very good. It does mean that if you book a September hunt expecting to dig a fresh black truffle out of a Valnerina hillside, the arithmetic is against you. Ask the operator plainly which species you will be looking for and whether it is in season. A good one will tell you straight, and several will suggest you come back in December. Worth the drive: the last Hermans concert, Saturday 12 September
The Hermans Festival has been moving around the valley since late August – early and baroque music played on period instruments, in the buildings it was written for. This year it has been through the abbey of San Pietro in Valle at Ferentillo, the Chiesa del Carmine at Montefranco, the old convent of San Francesco at Arrone and Sant’Antonio at Torre Orsina.
The closing concert is on Saturday 12 September at 18:00 in the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore at Collescipoli, with the Accademia Hermans playing Bach – a suite and the Brandenburg Concertos.
Note the date: it is the same Saturday as the last evening water release, which starts at 20:00. Whether you can do both depends entirely on how long the concert runs, and a suite plus Brandenburgs is not a short programme – ask when you book rather than assuming, because leaving Bach at the interval to make a waterfall is nobody’s idea of a good evening. If you have to choose, the concert is the rarer event. Check the festival’s own site for admission arrangements too; the listings we can see give the programme but not the ticketing.
The harvest came early
Italy’s 2026 vendemmia started ahead of schedule almost everywhere, Umbria included, after a hot summer – growers have been picking earlier than usual and reporting promising quality on lower volumes.
If you want to see it rather than read about it, Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia runs to 25 October, with twelve Umbrian estates taking part: picking, treading, walks through the rows, tastings, some of it built for children. Booking is compulsory and every estate sets its own hours and prices, so this is a phone-call-first outing, not a drop-in. Our Umbrian wine page covers what the region actually grows.
The honest crowd read
The timetable is the best crowd indicator there is, because the operator sets it to demand. That it shortens on 14 September tells you what the valley already knows: the season is turning. Expect the falls to feel busy on the two remaining September weekends and noticeably quieter midweek, and expect October weekdays – two single hours of water, opening at midday – to be about as calm as this place gets while the water is still running properly.
The trade is real, and it is a good one for some trips: fewer people, softer light, colour starting in the gorge, and every restaurant able to seat you. Just do not arrive without the timetable in your pocket.
Looking ahead to October
- 1 October – the uncinato season opens; white truffle is already in from the end of September. The valley’s food changes with it.
- Through 25 October – Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia continues.
- 30 October – 1 November – the saffron fair at Cascia, up the valley, celebrating the town’s zafferano purissimo. Worth building a day around if you are here at the end of the month.
