Autumn here is eating season with scenery attached – new oil running at the mills, the black-truffle calendar turning over, a torch-lit medieval joust down the road – and it opens with the region’s quietest good idea: September, when the weather still says summer and the crowds have gone back to work.
September — the insider month
The market data in our own research says it plainly: September ranks among the strongest months of the year for stays in the Ferentillo/valley area – and no wonder. The falls still run generous schedules, the lake’s authorised swimming season runs to 30 September, the trails have their temperatures back, and the villages have their squares back. If your diary allows exactly one week here, this is our honest recommendation for it.
The autumn calendar
- Late September–mid October: the Giostra dell’Arme at San Gemini (25 minutes) – the area’s big medieval re-enactment season, torch-lit lanes included.
- Mid October–mid November: Frantoi Aperti – Umbria’s open-mill weekends. Our local stop is Frantoio Bartolini at Arrone (pressing since 1850; free guided visits bookable online) – new oil on warm bruschetta is the season’s defining mouthful.
- From November: the black winter truffle (pregiato) season opens – hunts running, menus upgrading: truffle country.
- Autumn generally: the Ferentillo Verticale climbing meet has run in this season, and the woods above the gorge turn – the walking pages carry the routes.
Planning notes
- The falls timetable steps down as the season deepens – from October onwards, check the current schedule before promising anyone a full-flow afternoon, and note winter no-release-day pricing (€6) starts appearing in the calendar’s quiet corners.
- Rural kitchens begin their midweek naps – the call-ahead rule from the food pages applies double from October.
- Half-term families: late October works well – mummies, rafting’s shoulder-season operations (confirm availability with the operators), and mills in full flow.
