Spring here means a green gorge, a warming festival calendar and none of August’s arithmetic – and it’s when Italy itself arrives in waves you can predict to the day. Here’s how the season actually works.

The shape of spring

• March: quiet, changeable, cheap – the falls on their late-winter timetable, the valley to yourself. For walkers and workcationers, honestly underrated.
• April: the switch flips. Easter brings the falls’ first crowds of the year – 13,000+ visitors across Easter weekend 2026 – and the international rowing regatta fills Piediluco’s lakefront (the Memorial d’Aloja, held in late April; the 40th edition in April 2026 drew crews from around 20 nations, watched from the public lakefront).
• Late April–early May: festival high season – Narni’s Corsa all’Anello runs its three medieval weeks (last week of April to the second Sunday of May), with the terzieri taverns open – eating in one is a spring highlight in its own right.
• May–early June: the sweet spot: everything open, water everywhere, evenings warm enough for the terrace, crowds only on the dates below.

The bridges — Italy’s spring stampede, scheduled

Three dates dominate: 25 April (Liberation Day), 1 May, and 2 June (Republic Day). When they land near a weekend, Italy travels en masse – the verified numbers run to 7 million+ Italians on the road for a single bridge, over 90% staying domestic – and the falls are a classic gita destination. The playbook: book beds months out for bridge dates, buy falls tickets online, arrive before 10:00 – or simply aim your trip at the quiet weeks either side and get May’s weather without May Day’s car parks. Spring’s best days out

The falls in their green-gorge season; the Greenway as the valley greens up; regatta-watching with a lakefront coffee; the Corsa’s final joust; and the first swims – the lake’s authorised bathing season opens 1 May (beach facilities set their own opening dates – check ahead early in the season). Weather honesty: pack layers – spring in a river gorge runs cooler than the brochure photos suggest, especially in the evenings.
